Thin vs Thick Lenses: What’s the Difference?

If you have a particularly strong prescription, you’ve probably spent years worrying about the "bottle top" effect-where your lenses are so thick they spill out of the sides of your frames. It’s heavy, it’s uncomfortable, and it can make your eyes look magnified.

Our Sapphire Optics Manchester lab technicians use High-Index technology to bend light more efficiently. This means we can deliver the exact same visual clarity as a standard lens, but with a fraction of the bulk. Here is everything you need to know about choosing the right thickness for your new frames.

At a glance:
Thin (high-index) lenses use denser materials to reduce thickness and weight compared to standard lenses. Sapphire Optics offers a range of high-index options fitted in-house to improve comfort and appearance for stronger prescriptions.

Why Do Lenses Get Thick?

It’s all down to the "Index." In simple terms, the "Index" number tells you how efficiently a lens material bends light.

  • 1.5 Index (Standard): These are great for lower prescriptions. They are reliable and clear, but they require more material to do the job.

  • High-Index (Thin): These materials are denser, allowing the lens to be much slimmer while still giving you perfect vision.

The Sapphire Lab Guide to "Going Thin"

Depending on your prescription, our technicians usually recommend one of the following upgrades to keep your glasses feeling light and looking sleek:

  • 1.6 Index: Ideal for moderate prescriptions. They are up to 20% thinner than standard lenses and much tougher (great for rimless frames!).

  • 1.67 Index: The sweet spot for stronger prescriptions. These are significantly slimmer and reduce that annoying edge thickness.

  • 1.74 Index: The thinnest lens material available. If you have a very high prescription, this is the gold standard for a flat, discreet finish.

Is It Just About Looks?

While a slimmer profile looks much better in your Mens, Womens or Unisex frames, it’s also about comfort. Thicker lenses are heavier. If your glasses are constantly sliding down your nose or pinching your ears, switching to a high-index lens can make them feel weightless.

FAQ

Does everyone need thin lenses?

Not at all. If you have a mild prescription (e.g., +/- 1.00), a standard 1.5 lens will look perfectly fine. We’ll always be honest with you if an upgrade isn't necessary.

Are thin lenses lighter?

Yes, significantly. By using less material, we reduce the physical weight of the glasses, making them much more comfortable for all-day wear.

Can I reglaze my own frames with thin lenses?

Absolutely. Our Reglaze Only service is a popular way to slim down an old favourite pair of glasses that currently feels too heavy.

Are your lenses good quality?

We only use reputable global manufacturers. Whether you choose standard or ultra-thin, you’re getting the same precision engineering we use for all our Sapphire customers.
