From Prescription to Dispatch-Inside Our Optical Lab

Inside the Lab: What Happens After You Click 'Order'?

When you buy glasses online, it can feel a bit like sending your prescription into a black hole. You click "buy" and hope for the best. At Sapphire Optics, we do things differently. Every single pair of glasses is handcrafted right here in our Manchester lab by technicians with over 30 years of experience.

From the moment you upload your prescription to the second they land on your doorstep, here is the journey your eyewear takes.

At a glance:
Every pair of glasses at Sapphire Optics is prepared in-house at our Manchester lab, from prescription checks through to final quality control and dispatch. This process ensures accuracy, consistency, and a faster turnaround for UK customers.

Step 1: The Human Prescription Check

We don’t believe in "auto-approving" medical data. The first thing that happens is a manual review. Our team checks your prescription for clarity and matches it to your chosen frame. If something looks like a typo or doesn't seem quite right for the frame you've picked, we’ll pick up the phone and call you.

Step 2: Precision Lens Selection

Whether you’ve chosen Standard Single VisionThinner High-Index, or Reactions, we pull the specific lens "blanks" from our stock. These are then prepared with any coatings you’ve selected, like our premium Anti-Reflection or Blue Light filters.

Step 3: Digital Tracing & Glazing

Every frame has its own unique "fingerprint." We use specialist tracing equipment to map the exact shape of your frames. This data is sent to our glazing machine, which cuts your lenses with micrometre precision. This ensures a "click-fit" that is secure and sits perfectly flush with the frame.

Step 4: The 5-Point Quality Control

Before any glasses leave the bench, they must pass our rigorous quality check. We use a lensometer to verify that the finished lenses match your prescription exactly. We also check:

  • Lens Alignment: Ensuring the "optical centres" are exactly where they should be.

  • Frame Tension: Adjusting the arms so they aren't too loose or too tight.

  • Finish: Checking for any microscopic imperfections.

Step 5: Final Inspection & Dispatch

Once the lab team is happy, the glasses are cleaned, tucked into a protective Sapphire case, and handed to our dispatch team. Most orders are out the door within 1–3 working days.

FAQ

Who actually makes my glasses?

Your lenses are prepared and fitted by experienced optical technicians right here in the UK. With over three decades of experience, our team has handled everything from vintage reglazes to the latest high-tech digital lenses.

How long does the whole process take?

We pride ourselves on speed without compromising quality. Most orders are dispatched within 1–3 working days, though more complex prescriptions or specific coatings might take an extra day or two to perfect.

Are the glasses checked before they are posted?

Yes, multiple times! Every pair goes through a 5-point check during the glazing process and a final inspection before they are boxed up. If they aren't perfect, they don't leave the lab.
